Hobbiton hosts SA National School's Adventure Race
Hobbiton-on-Hogsback was the proud hosts of this year's S.A. National
Schools Adventure Race.
This annually held event is hosted each year by a different province and
Hobbiton was proud to host the event on behalf of the Eastern Cape.
The challenge is included under the Adventure Racing category which is a
fast-growing multi-disciplined sport, popular with all age groups and all
back-grounds.
For the period of 24th to the 27th September 2009 Hobbiton pushed 116
contestants to their limits.
The different age groups ranged from under 13s who completed a 40km race,
under 15s - 65kms and the under 19s who completed a 95km race. All of the
116 participants had already qualified in provincial trials in order to
enter the national event.
Challenges included cross country running, mountain biking,
swimming and water rafting in the beautiful Afrimontane area of the
Amatola mountain range.
To complete the distances the following activities were
included
in or near the Hobbiton Centre: Abseiling, Climbing Wall, Orienteering,
High Ropes Course work, Ballistics, Compass Work, Group Dynamics, and the

Despite an intense heat wave on Saturday, the lead U19 team made it in 10
hours, expressing the opinion that it was the toughest but also the best
race National Adventure race yet. Some of the teams that limped in after
13 hours were less expressive, being very grateful for the complementary
walking stick that Hobbiton gave them!
